FEATURED Dubrovnik hotels
Termed the 'Pearl of the Adriatic' the old walled city of Dubrovnik adopts the term with ease and it is fully justified. A truly beautiful and historic Mediterranean port, it once had only Venice as a rival for the importance of trade and has few comparisons the world over as a visitor destination today. Certainly the highlight of Croatia tourism, it is a place which has consistently attracted the rich and famous, the powerful and the influential. This is a factor reflected in the standard of Dubrovnik hotels, with over half the top luxury hotels in all of Croatia found on this unique and special port city.
The golden age of the city was the 15th to 16th centuries, at which point it was a center for trade, for literature, for arts and for establishing the culture and identity of Croatia. Little has changed in the years since, George Bernard Shaw referring to it as 'paradise on earth', and numerous world leaders, presidents and royalty all adding their favorable reviews. It is perhaps the unspoilt nature of the city which is so appealing, the incredible historic architecture, the fountains and winding streets, the rich cultural elements, museums, churches and monasteries all play their part in making the city, now, as ever, the place to see and in which to be seen.
The entire Old City, a World Heritage Site, is completely pedestrianized and although the maze of winding little streets can sometimes be confusing there is no better place in which to get lost. Walking around is all that is required to get a sense of the place but to do only that is to miss out on the real treasures which lie beneath, and sometimes on, the surface. Old town favorites on the tourist trail include the Bell Tower, with the famous bronze statues striking the bell on the hour. These statues are reproductions, the originals being in the Sponza Palace, a Gothic renaissance masterpiece. While the Dubrovnik hotels can not match it for sheer scale and beauty, some of them come pretty close.
The main street of the old town is Placa Stradun, lined by shops and properties of baroque architecture and it is where the culture of the city comes to life, through shopping certainly, but also as the site of numerous cultural events and festivals. After a walk taking in the sights it is perhaps time to have seat and for that there is the steps of Big Onofrio's Fountain. This is where people meet and hang out before a further assault on the city attractions. The Old Port of the city is certainly worth a visit, or just enjoy the best views over it all with a stroll atop the Old City walls. 2m thick, they can take the strain but if you can't take the heat then early morning or late afternoon is best.
